It has been the year of the separately managed account (SMA), driven by changing LP/GP power dynamics and the increased use of external allocations by multi-manager platforms.

These structures, which provide LPs with total transparency in return for a chunky investment, have been around for a long time, and came into their own during the sector’s post-Madoff transparency drive.
