Marex hires former Credit Suisse executive to lead Asia prime services

Marex has appointed former Credit Suisse prime derivatives executive Robert Cheeseman as head of Prime Services Asia as the firm looks to expand its hedge fund business across the region.

Cheeseman will oversee Marex’s Asian prime services operation, including prime brokerage and outsourced trading, working with hedge funds, asset managers, family offices and other institutional clients.

He joins after serving as managing director and co-head of client development at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, where he worked on expanding the exchange group’s relationships with institutional investors globally.

Credit Suisse prime experience

Cheeseman previously spent almost four years at Credit Suisse as managing director and head of APAC Prime Derivatives Services, leading teams across Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Mumbai.

He earlier headed APAC cross-asset listed derivatives execution at Morgan Stanley and spent almost a decade at Goldman Sachs, initially working in electronic cash equities in London before moving to Hong Kong in listed derivatives sales and trading.

Jack Seibald, global co-head of Prime Services at Marex, described Asia as an important growth market for the division and said Cheeseman’s appointment would support the firm’s expansion and development of client relationships across the region.

Marex builds prime services business

The appointment comes as Marex continues to develop its institutional prime services platform, which provides execution, financing, outsourced trading, operational support and capital introduction to emerging and established investment managers.

The firm has also been expanding its broader offering to hedge funds. Marex recently launched an aggregated liquidity platform for foreign exchange and precious metals, combining liquidity from multiple providers with execution, clearing and cross-asset margin services through a single prime brokerage relationship.

Marex operates more than 50 offices globally and serves over 3,400 clients across commodities and financial markets, including hedge funds and asset managers.
