Rokos Capital Management is accelerating its use of artificial intelligence as it looks to broaden its investment approach beyond macro trading and capture a wider set of opportunities across global markets.
In a recent update, CEO Matthew Sebag-Montefiore said advances in technology are “revolutionising what an individual person can do,” highlighting AI as a core enabler of the firm’s next phase of growth. Founder and CIO Chris Rokos added that deeper data analysis allows for more granular views of markets, improving the precision of investment decisions.
The London-based hedge fund, which manages over $20 billion in assets (ranking 36 in the AFI $10bn+ Hedge Fund Power List), is increasingly deploying AI tools to enhance research, generate insights and support portfolio construction. Luke de Olivera, head of AI at the firm, said Rokos is now expanding its focus into equities, using machine learning to identify opportunities alongside its traditional macro strategies.
“We want to explore all the different opportunities we have,” he said, describing AI as a way to “find more information in the world” and deepen analysis. The goal is not to replace human decision-making but to augment it, combining advanced technology with discretionary judgment.
The move reflects a broader shift across the hedge fund industry, where firms are investing heavily in AI and data infrastructure to gain an edge. Quantitative managers such as D. E. Shaw & Co. and Citadel have long relied on automation, while discretionary firms are increasingly integrating AI into research and trading workflows.
However, the impact of generative AI remains debated. Some industry leaders have argued that it has yet to materially improve returns, even as adoption accelerates.
For Rokos, the emphasis is on long-term capability building. The firm described its AI platform as a “powerful engine” still in its early stages, with significant room for expansion.
“It is so dynamic, and that pace of learning makes it fun,” said de Olivera. “We are just getting started.”
